A school accident book that works in every classroom and playground

Schools must record accidents to staff under the Social Security (Claims and Payments) Regulations 1979 where they have 10 or more employees, and Department for Education guidance says schools should keep a record of first aid given to pupils. An injury to a pupil is reportable under RIDDOR if it arose out of or in connection with a work activity, such as poorly maintained equipment, the way an activity was organised or the condition of the premises, and the pupil died or was taken directly from the scene to hospital for treatment. Injuries from normal play or sport that are not caused by the school’s work activity are not usually reportable.

Accident book entries should be kept for at least three years. Because children can bring a personal injury claim until three years after their 18th birthday, many schools keep pupil accident records until the pupil turns 21 or longer, in line with their retention policy.
