    Do nurseries have to keep an accident book?+
    Yes. The EYFS statutory framework requires early years providers to keep a written record of accidents or injuries and first aid treatment, and to tell parents or carers about any accident or injury, and any first aid given, on the same day or as soon as reasonably practicable.
    When must a nursery notify Ofsted about an accident?+
    Registered providers must notify Ofsted of any serious accident, illness or injury to, or death of, any child in their care, and of the action taken. This must be done as soon as reasonably practicable and within 14 days of the incident.
    Can a nursery accident book be digital?+
    Yes. The EYFS requires a written record, not a paper book. A digital record is fine as long as it is complete, kept securely and can be shown to parents and inspectors when needed.
    How long should nurseries keep accident records?+
    Because children can make a personal injury claim until three years after they turn 18, many settings keep children’s accident records until the child is 21 or longer. Check your insurer’s requirements and your data retention policy.
